This is done by setting a focus on the energy that is within the body. From birth, as a child grows there are a lot of factors that are introduced into his mind like those of pride, desires, lust or ego. The individual’s mind is very restless with all these anxieties rumbling around in the head. The idea behind yoga meditation is to calm the mind by tapping into the energy inside the body. For this some basic principles of yoga need to be adhered to.
The first and most important thing is to find a place where there are no outside disturbances. This Self-Realization comes through Yoga meditation of the Yoga Sutras, the contemplative insight of Advaita Vedanta, and the intense devotion of Samaya Sri Vidya Tantra, the three of which complement one another like fingers on a hand. With all this in place, start your meditation and try to control the mind, body and senses. Once the mind reaches a state of calm, then concentrate on the energy within and try to find a correlation with the whole cosmic creation. It is said that this constant control over the mind, body and related activities helps the yogi’s mind to attain the highest goal possible in life and that is freeing oneself from one’s material existence.
One has to be prepared physically and mentally for the conditioning that it is going to provide to your mind. It means freedom from material connections and one has to be strong-minded enough to go through with it.
Meditation truly means cutting across all the queries within us forever. the sooner the queries dissolve. we shall one day come face-to-face with God. reach the stage of Nirvikalpa Samadhi (the stage of nothingness). the culmination of all that we call Spiritual. becomes a Mahavira , Buddha, Christ or a Mohammed. The correct mode of Meditation is lying in the Shavasana pose (the dead form) and practicing Neti (not this, not this). This was the path taken by Maharishi Ramana. it is a wonderful means of Meditation. I was lucky that God guided me on this path inherently. Meditation does not mean sitting anywhere closing our eyes and concentrating on nothing or trying to focus on the various faces of gods. We shall never achieve anything by this process.
Whenever we try to go wrong. the small sweet inner voice always tries to prompt us towards the right path. is it not a form of Meditation for our atman the soul within cannot but afford wastage of precious time by its physical manifest form (the form of a human being). Most Human Beings tend to ignore the promptings of atman the soul within and continue with their lives basing their decisions more on ego than our atman the soul within. The sooner the control is established over the five senses. we are easily able to establish our control over the numerous thoughts entering our brain. The moment we reach the stage when the flow of inconsistent thoughts stops forever it is known as the stage of Nirvikalpa Samadhi. here we come across face-to-face with God Almighty in all its cosmic glory. I just but find no words to describe this stage as only after gaining control of senses do we reach the stage of Nirvikalpa Samadhi. Nirvikalpa Samadhi is the stage when we have almost crossed over the physical barrier of life. we have gained absolute control over our five senses and finally the straying mind.
Gaining absolute control over the mind is possible after we have gained absolute control of senses.
To control the numerous thoughts entering our brain every moment of life is the most difficult to achieve.

Meditation on a mantra is somewhere in between. You do hold an object in mind, a sound vibration, but all you need to do is keep listening to it and let everything else happen on its own. Many of the concentrative forms of meditation deal with forcing the mind into a corner until it surrenders itself to your command. I included some general info about this form of meditation and I included a part called: “Instructions In Effortless Mantra Meditation.” This part will provide you with some short yet decent instructions on how to start effortless mantra meditation. You can read a couple of quotations I took form some of these indian mastersI include some quotes of wisdom that are about meditation from some indian masters and comment on it, sharing my own perspective. The Gayatri Mantra is probably the most populair multi-syllable mantra out there. It has a powerful meaning and vibration to it that makes it extremely suitable for Mantra Meditations . Mantra Meditation is a meditation technique that develops concentration through repetition of a sound vibration. This meditation technique , when practiced more often, establishes a state of transcendance. At the end there is a video of Osho talking about meditation for contemporary people. I will update the article with more quotes and videos of indian masters that give us their definition of what meditation means in their eyes. When I find valuable ones I will comment on them aswell.
Equanimity is a skill : Resting on the foundation of the other six skills is the skill to not be disturbed by any situation, whether in daily life or at meditation time. It means that even though you may correctly evaluate some situation or thought to be “bad,” you can remain calm and do not, yourself become disturbed. An individual thought : First, the skill of letting go of individual thoughts, one at a time. We can do this moment by moment as we sit for meditation, intentionally allowing a single thought to arise, and then consciously watching that thought drift away. Streams of thoughts : Second, after we become somewhat skilled in this practice of dealing with one single thought at a time, we gradually develop the skill of witnessing a stream of thoughts.
The ability to inspect individual thoughts is a skill, not a method, and is crucial for advancing in meditation. Attenuating samskaras and karma : This ability to bring back, and to inspect thought patterns is a key skill in attenuating the deep impressions of samskaras that normally, invisibly lead to the playing out of our karma (actions) in the external world. Often, we don’t really see these thought patterns, but instead get unconsciously led to actions and speech that we later regret. While we are learning specific methods, it is very useful to continually remember that the ability to witness objects in the train of mind is a root skill we are trying to cultivate. Inspecting helpful and not helpful : When one can witness the train of objects traveling in the mind, the next skill is the ability to call back individual thought patterns so that they may be observed and inspected with that trained skill of witnessing. The root skill is how to witness and let go : To quiet the mind does not mean suppression or repression of thoughts and emotions. It has to do with the skill of letting go, of allowing the thought patterns to flow without interruption, remaining focused not on the objects in the flow of the river of mind, but on the stream itself.
The root skill is how to maintain equanimity : This quality of not being disturbed does not mean being inert. This skill means having balance, equanimity, which comes over time. This equanimity does not mean being emotionless. Meditation, contemplation, mantra and prayer finally converge into a unified force directed towards the final stage, piercing the pearl of wisdom called bindu, leading to the Absolute. Witness everything : Often students of meditation mistakenly trying to eliminate thought patterns from the mind, rather than learning to be a neutral witness of the objects of the mind field. This mistake usually comes from misunderstanding the process of quieting the mind.
Sitting posture : Several different meditation postures are offered in Yoga, including the Accomplished pose (Siddhasana), the Auspicious pose (Swastikasana), the Easy pose (Sukhasana), and the Friendship pose (Maitriasana). One may spend years developing and refining their meditation sitting posture. Learn the skill, not just techniques : Below are seven skills to cultivate for Meditation. It is the skill we want to learn, not merely techniques (though, again, the techniques are quite useful). Like fingers on a hand : These skills work together, like fingers on a hand, and bring one ever closer to meditation, samadhi, and Self-Realization.
Techniques are tools to gain skills : In Yoga science, all of the techniques are used to develop certain skills by which one can meditate at a depth that will reveal the Center of Consciousness, the Self within. It is not so much a matter of the techniques themselves being important, but rather the techniques are tools to cultivate the underlying skill. There are many Yoga techniques that can be learned. In pursuing those techniques, one can be left with a bewildering sense of uncertainty about “why” all of the methods are being learned, aside from a general idea that the methods are for “Self-Realization” or “Enlightenment”.
The flexibility of the body, and elimination of soreness or pain is enhanced by Hatha Yoga postures. We employ the classical approaches of Raja, Jnana, Karma, and Bhakti Yoga, as well as Hatha, Kriya, Kundalini, Laya, Mantra, Nada, Siddha, and Tantra Yoga.
Yoga today is being regarded as a very effective alternative to conventional medicine. It is known to work alone and in conjunction with regular treatment. This science is almost 5000 years old and it has developed over the ages to promote mental and physical health. Yoga Mind Control is updated, improved and articles are being added on a daily basis. The aspect of asanas that come in handy in mastering the mind, is that the body is always there. While you are in an asana or in one of these on line yoga moves , the mind may run here and there, but your physical practice always gives your mind an anchor point to return to. Not only in the practice of pranayama is breathing and breath awareness most essential, in the yoga asanas breathing is just as important to fully relax the body. These on line yoga moves remove toxins in the body and when done with proper attention, they will make your body ‘lighter’ and higher your body’s vibrational level. When practicing these yoga moves, put all of your awareness into your body.
The goal of on line yoga moves and asanas in general is to get in a state of peace and tranquility.
Whether one believes in God with or without form, as personal or impersonal, or whether or not one believes in God at all, one can practise some form of meditation conducive to success in one’s particular approach. The science of meditation, raja yoga, includes a comprehensive psychology, both theoretical and practical, designed to diagnose one’s state of mind and prescribe an appropriate technique to make the mind fit for deeper states of concentration. Meditation leads the developed yogi to a waveless state of mind in which spiritual truth is spontaneously revealed. This is the goal of raja yoga. “The real aim is to make the mind functionless,” said Swamiji, “but this cannot be done unless one becomes absorbed in some object.”
Although meditation is the speciality of raja yoga, it is practised in some form in every yoga. Although the terms “concentration” and “meditation” are used interchangeably, concentration means focusing the mind on any given object, and meditation means concentration on spiritual truth. Modern medical science has discovered the therapeutic value of meditation in treating hypertension, high blood pressure, insomnia and other by-products of high-pressure civilization. The Latin root of the word meditation means “to heal,” but spiritual seekers will always consider good health as a fringe benefit, subordinate to their primary Goal, which is Self-realisation or God-realisation.
Witnessing one’s thoughts, one feels disidentified with the Witness Self, the spiritual Reality. As the spiritual aspirant practises this type of meditation, he finds his wandering mind becoming calm, fit for deeper meditation. The combined practice of withdrawing the mind and focusing the attention leads gradually to dhyana, the state of true meditation, when we are able to hold the mind on one chosen thought. Sri Ramakrishna used to say that the mind is like a naughty child; if you look at it intently, it feels shy, as it were, and begins to behave. Some also practise this type of meditation just to relax. Another type of meditation is to think excellent thoughts. One general type of meditation is to witness the workings of the mind without trying to suppress or direct thoughts that arise. The benefits of meditation depend in part on the motive one has in practising. The jnana yogi in his discrimination between the Real and the unreal, the karma yogi in his performance of selfless work, the bhakta yogi in his worshipful adoration of the Divine and the raja yogi in his quest to control the mind, all benefit from the power of concentration developed through meditation. The sixth type of meditation is meditation on the Absolute Brahman, the formless, qualityless, impersonal Reality beyond all conceptions, the Ground of Being. Monistic Vedanta recommends this type of meditation.
Of all spiritual disciplines prescribed for attainment of Self or God-realisation, meditation forms the core, the common, underlying thread. If we love the object of meditation, our concentration deepens more easily. The yogi cultivates devotion to improve his meditation. The devotee practises meditation to deepen his love for God. Some like to think of God as endowed with personal qualities such as love and kindness but without form. Many sects of Hinduism and Buddhism practise meditation on God with form. They regard the various deities, Shiva, Durga, Vishnu; and the Avataras like Rama, Krishna, Buddha, Jesus, and Ramakrishna; as manifestations of the Supreme God.
Because the disease of worldly attachment is deep-seated, drastic medicine may be needed to root it out. Therefore, some religious teachers instruct their students to practice meditation in a cremation ground or graveyard to impress vividly the transience of the world on an overly attached mind. Swami Vivekananda said, “Meditation is the focusing of the mind on some object. “The greatest help to spiritual life is meditation,” said Swami Vivekananda. Even from the standpoint of maintaining one’s physical and mental health in our modern world, one should consider practising meditation. Perhaps the root meaning, “to heal,” most accurately describes the value of meditation, which can cure our ills, be they physical, mental or spiritual.
Some teachers, especially Buddhists, recommend meditation on the transitoriness of all things. “In meditation we divest ourselves of all material considerations and feel our divine nature.”
We can categorize meditation in the sense of concentrated thinking into six major types.
Spiritual teachers from different religious traditions, philosophical orientations and cultures prescribe different meditation techniques.
Yogis, practitioners of raja yoga, describe five states of mind. The same person may experience these five states at various times. Swami Brahmananda said, “The mind has to be made steady by two means: first, go to a quiet place, make the mind free from waves, and meditate.
To do so means working with a posture that is right for you, regardless of your stage of development. The easiest to start with is the Friendship pose (Maitriasana) which is sitting straight in a chair (though even this requires some training to do well). We want to gain the ability to directly relax the body, smoothen the breath, and quiet the mind in a moment, with no technique needed to do it. Because of the practice of the methods, one develops a heightened level of awareness and an increasing ability to simply “relax the body” with no technique whatsoever. The skill of serene breath, in a moment : Eventually one develops the direct skill of making the breathing process serene, in a moment. The ability to attend to breath in this way is a skill, not a method.
Washington, June 26: Researchers examined how meditation enhances the three subcomponents of attention which are: 1: The ability to manage and prioritise tasks and goals; 2: The ability to focus on specific information, and; 3: The ability to remain focussed on the environment. Read many quotes taken from the many teachings and lectures given by Osho. His words are sharp and clear and his understanding seems infinite. His knowledge about meditation, yoga and the mind is wide. Most of all, his way of expressing his knowledge is convincing, entertaining and it hookes your mind to his words. About nine months ago Elleke van Kraalingen, who is my teacher at the Teachers-school for Yoga and Meditation announced the visit of a Swami from India: Swami Umesh Yogi. Sri Swami Shivapremananda Sunday, June 17, 2007 21:36 IST So what is meditation? In the countries in the west, ‘meditation’ often means a focussed state; a concentrated state of mind in serious reflection. The word meditation, is rooted in Latin as mederi; which means ?to heal?.

The mind becomes finely tuned and the learning of yoga, and especially meditation, is enhanced. Simple poses; later the methods become finer, the effects more subtle, the meditation alive and creative. You can choose from the many different methods of yoga we teach and use them as you wish.
I am impartial, detached and unrelated.” This meditation is best taught directly from teacher to student, so the mind doesn”t make detours. This follows laws and tendencies of the mind that all people have in common. That explains why we also find directions and instructions in Europe from different periods in time, showing a similar insight to the one Inner Silence is based on. In our teaching, we move through the different levels of the mind, reaching what we can call real meditation. This is fundamentally different from trance, “positive thinking” or hypnosis (often called “healing” or “mental training”), where you manipulate the mind and limit it to your own or other”s conceptions.
During meditation, insight gradually grows about the nature of the chakras, that is, whirls or corridors penetrating your being - where body, mind, energy, and the innermost part of you merge. (The word “chakra” means circle, wheel or whirl, energy whirl). In simple terms the spontaneous concentration of the mind on the object is Meditation. Now let us see in detail what exactly he means to say about Dhyan(meditation), We all know that our mind is fickle, like a butterfly, which always flies from here and there and does not wait at one place for long. Meditation is one of the very effective ways to control the mind. This control can’t be achieved in short period. Meditation is a systematically designed technique to achieve this step by step. Once the mind thinks of some other factors your meditation comes to an end. This stage is truly a very fundamental stage and needs a lot of practice because we are never used to control our minds. Once you have achieved this for specific period of time you can try for the ‘Dhyan’.
The initial four stage are the basic stages which help the person to attain “Sthiram” (stability of mind) which is the prior necessity for practicing the further stages of meditation. How do we achieve that? In the fundamental stages of meditation one has to decide some target upon which one can concentrate. Computer Software CD (Audio/ video of asanas, pranayama, yoga nidra, meditation, omkar chanting and many more.)
As the name suggests this is a very simple and easy technique of meditation, which can be followed by anyone irrespective of age, sex and physical condition. Even patients can follow this. Meditation takes the consciousness beyond conscious, sub conscious & unconscious states to super consciousness.
As a true tantric meditation, Ajapa Japa builds on a sequence of methods which takes you to increasingly finer states: a special way of breathing, the psychic breath; a mantra; the chakras and other deeper methods. You do not merely analyse yourself; you see yourself.” The knowledge or the insight which comes from this meditation influences everyday life. It represents the heart of Tantra, the tantric attitude: “You accept yourself as you are and the way you live. The meditation starts in the world you perceive through your senses, in the place and in the surroundings where you are meditating at that moment, and your ability to experience is enhanced. Right from the start we ask you not to talk with your fellow students about what you experience in your meditation. Digest the experiences yourself and in this way get the most out of what you learn.
Don”t use any techniques (meditations, therapies, massage, astrology, tarot etc.) while you are here other than what you learn on the course - neither alone, nor together with others. Real meditation is founded on clarity, expanded awareness and increased energy.
The mind, however, should also be trained to use the new openness and focus itself on one thing at a time. Here we use different techniques; Tratak where we look at outer and inner objects and Nada Yoga where we discover the inner sounds and listen to them. Our present knowledge of the Chakras comes solely from the tradition of yoga. In earlier times in Europe, they were known to the alchemists and gnostics, in Israel to the kabalists and in North America to the Hopis. As explained in the section on Karma Yoga, you will get the most out of the retreat if you are active - and that also applies to what you do in your free time. The following ten days you keep to a mild diet that is gentle for the intestines and preserves the harmony created in the body by the cleansing. If you smoke, it is easier to quit when doing these practices - don”t let the habit make the decisions, but listen to your body and avoid smoking as long as the diet lasts. Yoga can give your nervous system a chance to manage on its own, without the guardianship of the nicotine. The first purpose of the yoga poses (asana) is to remove disturbances in the body, that stand in the way of wellbeing and concentration. With yoga, you relax and remove what is standing in the way of your concentration.
When the body is still and the muscles are stretched for a while, tensions cannot be maintained ” a method that is unique to classical yoga itself. German doctors from Hanover and Colonge have conducted laboratory studies on teachers and students. They concluded that there is no method or medication as effective in normalising the blood pressure as the breathing exercises in yoga.
An important experience in the process is your participation in the tasks around the Course Center: in the garden; with the horses; in the woods and fields; preparing food; baking bread; dish washing and cleaning or perhaps doing repairs on a house. Socially speaking, Karma Yoga (as these activities are called) implies that you do things for others, together with others and that you don”t expect to be waited on. Someone who cannot find happiness is not active.” Many have discovered this secret on our courses. Without Karma Yoga it would be impossible to run such comprehensive courses. Many students find that Yoga Nidra is helpful for insomnia. They regularly use the CD “Experience Yoga Nidra” Experience Yoga Nidra at home. What use is there in making a resolution if the sub”conscious mind resists? The purpose of Yoga Nidra is to reach a true state of being, therefore the name: Conscious (yoga) sleep (nidra). When you reach a deep state lying or standing completely still in, say, the plow pose, you concentrate on a specific area of the body. Using Mudras and Bandhas, you influence these areas with your energy. In Yoga Nidra, they are reached through symbols and mantras. Found on our website, Bindu #11 Bindu #11 contains in-depth articles on Yoga Nidra and Tantra, as well as a scientific study of Yoga Nidra made at The State University Hospital in Copenhagen).
To be able to concentrate, to let go and experience for instance a yoga pose, you must be able to relax. Therefore it is important to combine Yoga Nidra with the other exercises we use during the daily program on a course. Yoga Nidra is not just relaxation. It is a method of building a bridge between the inner and outer consciousness.
Through breathing exercises, you get to know your energy and, with a new sensitivity, you can begin to control it. This way the yogi can regulate the functions in the nervous system which are normally outside the influence of the will. The effects of this show in daily life as increased creativity and concentration. The chakras play a part in influencing the psychosomatic balance in the body and the control of functions normally outside conscious control (autonomous).
Silence. Silence (Mauna) is part of the schedule, and we mean this literally. In this way you give the brain a rest; especially the left brain. Efforts are being continuously made to find out the ways and means to establish control over mind. Mind can recollect past experiences, keeps thinking about the future and experiences the present with all its might and we do not have any control over our minds journey. You have to control movements of mind and make it stable whenever you want, as per your requirements. This is the most difficult part because of unstable nature of mind. This process of making mind stable is called concentration. This is true for any function of mind. ‘Dhyan’(meditation) is the study of deep concentration, calmness and tranquility of the mind. It is the study of attaining complete control over ones mind. If you want to remember a particular event, you will have to concentrate your mind till you remember that event. It is clear from the above discussion that it is essential to control the mind. Only then, one can get what he wants. To learn what the speaker is telling, you must establish control over your mind and force it to listen to the lecture.
